NEW, FULL-SCALE, UHD/HDR TECHNICAL TEST

After broadcasting Le Corsaire and Carmen* in ultra HD, ARTE and its partners are conducting another full‑scale UHD/HDR technical test
from 12 to 22 September 2018
ARTE is collaborating with Amazon CloudFront and AWS Elemental, Anyware Video, ATEME, Cobalt, Globecast, Molotov, Philips, SES (Astra), TDF (Broadcasting France) and Technicolor to:

  • produce the original ARTE Live (1080i) programme in a seamless UHD HDR10 programme by using native UHD HDR content, when available, or by upconverting the Live HD to UHD HDR,
  • broadcast ARTE’s Live programme, upconverted to UHD HDR, on various supports: terrestrial broadcasting via the multi-town (Paris, Toulouse, Nantes) DTT channel, satellite broadcasting via Astra, HbbTV via connected televisions and OTT via Molotov, a free streaming website,
  • study and compare, on a second parallel terrestrial and satellite channel, the picture quality obtained on various consumer televisions (LCD, OLED, top-range, mid-range, etc.) using various transmission standards (HDR10, HLG, SL-HDR, HD, UHD, etc.).

This experiment will be conducted from 12 to 22 September 2018. A professional seminar will be held at ARTE France on Thursday 20 September to analyse HDR production and distribution solutions and debrief.
Simultaneously, the video stream of the experiment will be available at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) that will be held in Amsterdam from 14 to 18 September 2018. The IBC promotes the electronic media, entertainment and technology industries.
